Staycation: The Wharf

If you’re from the DMV, you know that this place is not what it was 10 years ago. The District Wharf has blossomed into a gorgeous waterfront experience full of amazing restaurants, a new concert venue, and high-rise hotel properties. Once upon a time, I had a staycation here for my birthday so I know how amazing it is in the summertime but there are holiday charms here as well.

Stay

I was slightly spoiled last year for my birthday and a boy that I no longer know booked us a room in the Canopy by Hilton. It was gorgeous. Luckily, all the properties is this area are gorgeous as well. Hyatt House has a rooftop pool and the InterContinental is just plain luxurious.

Eat

  • Kith & Kin — this heavenly place is a Black owned business and is simply outstanding *chef’s kiss*

  • Officina — some of the best pasta you will ever have and a gorgeous, modern aesthetic to match

  • The Fish Market — best place for fresh seafood of every kind

  • Mi Vida — the drinks outshine the food but the I enjoyed the experience overall

  • Milk Bar — believe the hype, these desserts are to die for

Drink

Most of the nightlife here centers around the concert venue, The Anthem, but there are some great bars nearby, too. Whiskey Charlie can be found atop the Canopy by Hilton. It is an amazing rooftop bar that make STRONG and aromatic drinks. I had two drinks up there and was down for the count. For an authentic pub scene or a good beer, I recommend Kirwin’s. For my cocktail drinkers, Tiki TNT is a rum-centric paradise with kitschy Hawaiian-style decor. For a wholesome, non-alcoholic beverage, Blue Bottle Coffee is a great spot to get a great cup of (sweet Dunkin’ Donuts style) coffee.

Go

In the summer, I suggest sitting on the swings by the water and taking every opportunity to eat outside. Since it’s freezing, hang out at the ice rink or catch the water taxi to Georgetown or Alexandria. Camp Wharf is one of my favorite places no matter the season. Here you can lounge around a large wood-burning fire and roast marshmallows. It is a nostalgic experience and also keeps you warm during the cold DC winters. If you are looking for a romantic ending to your evening, go sit on the steps of one of the nearby memorials and have a “My Date with the President’s Daughter” moment. It’s very cliche but still cute.

$$$

Oh honey, this place is overpriced. Spend a weekend here and your belly will be full but pockets will be empty. Go ahead and save up a little bit before you try to host a staycation here. Maybe try a day trip.

The Overall Tea:

I thoroughly enjoy each trip that I take to the Wharf. Whether you are staying for the weekend or just the afternoon, there is always something fun to do and somewhere pretty to take a picture. I recommend you devote an entire day to exploring the Wharf and get a taste for what you like. I also recommend this place for solo travelers because being by the water is so relaxing and there are plenty of ways to have fun alone here.
