2020 Must-See Broadway Shows

Let me start this post with a disclaimer: I cannot promise that I will see each of these magnificent shows because I am on a budget. I do promise that I will try my best to see them all. Nonetheless, these are the must-see shows for 2020. If you are one of the many uncultured swines that finds Broadway musicals to be boring or lame, I challenge you to see at least one live show next year. If I can sit through a baseball game, you can sit through a Broadway show. Also remember, you can get wine in most theaters so sit back and enjoy.

West Side Story

This is on my top three list of musicals. It is one of my favorites in every way. Now, I have no clue what to expect from this revival. I think it will be a whole new take on a classic. I heard they removed “I Feel Pretty” and also aren’t having an intermission. Based on the reviews that I have seen, this will be an enthralling and intense adaptation. They are even changing all of the choreography so we might be in for a whole new musical. I am excited and scared.

Six

My anglophile ways are slipping out again. This musical started out on the West End and I will admit, it looks corny. I think its the kind of corniness that make musicals so entertaining. Imagine if the Spice Girls sang Cell Block Tango. That is the vibe of Six. It is about Henry VIII’s six wives and how they lived (then, died) while they were wed to him. It is a spunky, sassy pop girl group musical and I am ready to stand in the audience and scream like I am at a concert.

Tina: The Tina Turner Musical

This show open recently so I haven’t had the chance to see it yet but I have listened to the soundtrack. If you grew up watching What’s Love Got to Do with It? every time that it came on BET, this musical is for you. I used to live for Angela Bassett’s portrayal of Tina Turner and this show is taking it to the next level. This looks like a high energy show packed with all of Tina’s greatest hits and I am ready to be rolling on the river.

The Music Man

This was one of the first musicals that my parents ever showed me. It is also in my top three. Our beloved Aussie, Hugh Jackman will be playing Harold Hill and Sutton Foster will be playing Marian the Librarian. I just want to cry tears of excitement. It is not set to come out until the Fall of 2020 so you all have time to watch the movie version or listen to the soundtrack. I have no doubt that Jackman will do an phenomenal job because we’ve already seen his musical prowess.

Slave Play

Ok…I know this looks bad but I think we all need to see this play. I have done some research and the writer, soon-to-be icon Jeremy O. Harris, wants the premise to be a surprise. I do not think play will romanticize slavery or show anything brutal or violent. I get the sense that this play centers around a bigger conversation about race and gender. Whatever it is about, I think it is one of those things that you must experience yourself so I will be checking it out. Also, to increase diversity in the theater, Harris made his tickets $39. We love to see it.

Overall Tea:

The 2020 season is looking very exciting and daring. I hope the new shows live up to the hype and are able to stick around long enough for me to see them. Again, if you have never seen a Broadway show, I challenge you to make it happen in 2020!
