NYC Weekend Getaway
/To treat myself for Valentine’s Day I took a little trip to New York City to see TINA: The Tina Turner Musical. I did not want to spend much money because it was just an overnight but I wanted to have a good time. Here is a little recap of my weekend getaway to NYC.
Stay
I hit the jackpot with this boutique hotel. The location was perfect. The room was chic and modern with a fantastic view. Best of all I used Booking.com and did not have to pay for anything until I arrived. Staying at Hotel on Rivington was a fantastic experience and I recommend for solo travelers and couples alike. The staff are attentive and they offer turn-down service and put cookie in your room before bed. I had a full-blown photo shoot in my King-sized room because it was that gorgeous. There are floor to ceiling windows that wrap around the room and they give you a small balcony. The bathroom had a shower with a huge window and the deepest tub I have ever seen. Eat
I knew that I would really EAT when I went to New York. There are so many amazing restaurants, markets, and food trucks in the city. Here are just a few of the meals that I devoured throughout the weekend:
Sweet Chick - this is one of my favorite places to get specialty chicken and waffles. I recommend the bacon cheddar waffles with Nashville fried chicken
Essex Market - I ate so much and paid so little here. This is New York’s oldest public market and it is incredible.
Dominican Cravings - located inside of Essex Market, the empanadas here are to die for
Bill’s Bar and Burger - great place to grab a huge burger and a beer
Chip NYC - for all my cookie lovers, this place had massive cookies with crispy outsides and gooey centers.
Schnipper’s - located right outside of Port Authority, great meal to grab before your bus ride home
Drink
When I am visiting the city that never sleeps, I barely sleep either. One of my all time favorite places to go is Iron Bar in Time Square. You can find me here at 2 am eating chicken wings and smoking mango mint hookah. Some other great bars include Pianos, Mr. Purple, and No Fun. For a wine enthusiasts, I recommend ordering a flight at Uva. If local breweries tickle your fancy, head to Long Island City and hop from one brewery to the next. Fifth Hammer Brewery is one of my favorite breweries over there.
Go
If you are visiting New York and you aren’t seeing a show, you should just go back home. Imagine going to Las Vegas without even stepping foot in a casino. Taking the time to see a Broadway musicals or plays should be an essential part of any New York itinerary (along with the famous buildings and Statue of Liberty). If you want to go beyond the flashing lights of Time Square, take a stroll through Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and grab lunch at Smorgasburg. If you only visited New York to take pictures, be sure you stop by The High Line and get a milkshake from Black Tap.
$$$
Everyone knows that New York is insanely expensive. Try your best to cut costs with Groupon, TravelZoo, and Airbnb Experiences.
The Overall Tea
This isn’t the type of place you can only visit one time. In fact, I am supposed to be going back next month to see another show. If you are traveling alone — rejoice! You can fill your itinerary with what interests you whether it’s shopping, eating, or sightseeing. If you are on a baecation, the romantic rooftop views and cozy boutique hotels will be a perfect backdrop for your weekend. Lastly, if you are in a group, be sure to make your reservations in advance so that your entire group can devour all of the Jacob’s Pickle mac and cheese that your heart desires.
