Winter Break Binging List
/Whether you have the week off (like me) or the whole month off (like all the lucky students), there are so many great shows that you can use this time to binge watch. I have most of the streaming services because I am slightly obsessed with television so here are my recommendations.
Netflix
The Good Place
Crissle from The Read was raving about watching The Good Place so I gave it a try and I was not disappointed. This show is clever, hilarious, and full of twists. This is a step above your typical prime time comedy because it is so eccentric and creative. The show is about a woman who has recently died and ended up in The Good Place (heaven) but is only there by mistake. Each season reveals more shocking truths about the afterlife and the characters are like toys from the Island of Misfit Toys. They are lovable, horrible and hysterical.
Dirty John
If you like Snapped or anything in the True Crime genre, Dirty John will tickle your fancy. This show is about an overly-trusting wealthy white woman that falls for a mysterious guy with a lifetime of secrets. Each episode gets more and more wild and it is all a true story. This show had me screaming out loud at some of the wild stuff this guy was doing and how unfazed the woman was by it. Nothing screams “danger ahead” like a guy with inexplicable amounts of cash asking to put cameras in your house but hey, she was blinded by love. Watch this wild ride and enjoy the violent ending.
Amazon Prime
The Boys
I binged this show a while back but I will probably watch it again before season 2 comes out. This show is crazy and clever at the same time! It shows the unglamorous and pretty unethical way that superheros come to be and the backlash that follows. These superheros are no Avengers. They are damaged, perverted, complicated people that happen to have supernatural powers. They are simultaneously saving and ruining the world. I can’t give too much away because this is another show with lots of twists and turns. Watch it for yourself and you will be addicted. The characters are grimy and compelling. Overall the show is addictive.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
On a much lighter note, this show is adorable and charming. If you’re looking for something you can watch with your mom — this is it. It stars the incomparable Rachel Brosnahan as a mom, separated wife, and stand-up comedian. The shots of New York in the ‘60s are delightfully simplistic and nostalgic and the score compliments them perfectly. I love a show that can transport me to another time and place and this is a perfect example. On top of that, Mrs. Maisel is breaking boundaries by speaking candidly about womanhood, motherhood, and even sex. In the 1960s, her comedy would have been seen as unladylike and vulgar but to me it is honest and hilarious. This show is a love letter to strong women and their resilience.
Hulu
Killing Eve
This show is insane. There’s romance, humor, suspense, and tons of bloody killing. Chasing down a murderous psychopath is no easy feat especially when she knows you are looking for her. This show will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is no surprise that this show was created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge because of how smart and clever the story is. You will find yourself sympathizing with a psychopathic killer and maybe even routing for her to be free. This is the type of show you can watch in one weekend because it is that addicting. Season 2 should be added to Hulu soon. If you already binged season 2 of You, this is the perfect show to watch next.
Looking for Alaska
If you are looking for an angsty teen drama to make you relive your high school days, this show is perfect. Based on a young adult novel, this show is about a close knit group of friends and their time at a boarding school. In the face of tragedy, this group of friends must band together and support one another to uncover the truth behind the heartbreaking event. You’ll watch the characters fall in love, pull pranks, and partake in general teenage mischief. I watched this show in one day because it had me hooked. You might even shed a few tears before its over.
